Better late than not at all?

A GRIP ON SPORTS

Sorry this is late today but I had a family commitment to attend to this morning. But we have your links ready now. Read on.

••••••••••

• Because it is so late in the morning – at least for this column – we’ll just dispense with the usual blather about this or that and get to the stories you should be reading. I know that will bring a tear to the eye of a couple folks – both of whom are related to me – but everyone is else is probably doing a bit of a dance, though quite possibly just with their feet under their work desk. A pox on all of you.

• WSU: Not a lot going on in the Cougars’ world right now, what with graduation having come and gone. But the baseball team did defeat Utah 1-0 in Pac-12 play yesterday and the Pac-12 track and field championships featured the decathlon and heptathlon as their kickoff events. Jacob Thorpe covered the latter with this story . … The Seattle Times looks at WSU’s spring practices .

• Chiefs: Portland was this close to elimination in the WHL championship series but rallied and won 6-5 in overtime at Edmonton to send it to a game seven in Portland tonight.

• Shock: The Portland Thunder had won two in a row. Had . They lost last night to undefeated Arizona, 61-32.

• Seahawks: Pete Carroll may be in his sixties, but he not a “get-off-my-lawn” type of AARP member. In fact, he embraces youth and all the enthusiasm it brings.

• Mariners: This is my favorite item from yesterday. The M’s made five errors in their 9-7 loss to Kansas City yesterday. No, that’s not why this is my favorite item. The five errors ticked off Lloyd McClendon a little bit. “We kicked ourselves in the ass today,” he told reporters, “and it’s that simple.” That is commentary that gets right to the point. I think I might just like McClendon’s outspokenness. … Dustin Ackley (pictured) hit two home runs . Yep, two. The M’s needed three. … Taijuan Walker and James Paxton are feeling stronger every day . … Regional baseball networks are all the rage. So were VCRs not that long ago.

• Sounders: Talk about errors. The Sounders made more than five yesterday. So many, in fact, I lost count. Anyway, the league-leading team lost 5-0 in New England , the Sounders’ worst MLS loss . It wasn’t the type of match anyone envisioned . Now all Seattle can do is hope it gets to the MLS Cup so it can avenge itself.

• Again, sorry this wasn’t up sooner. We’ll be back tomorrow at the usual time. And by that I mean the usual, usual time. Not today’s usual time. Until later …
