Spotlight predator hunt
Kudos to Kathleen Parker (Oct. 26) on her opinion column.
We need more journalistic coverage on what is going on with our wildlife. Should anybody feel the urge to practice a bloodlust sport, Idaho is the place.
In Idaho, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management grants a permit requested by Idaho for Wildlife to conduct a winter predator derby on BLM-managed lands.
According to the Western Environmental Law Center, the derby is a three-day killing spree, repeated yearly for five years, on 3 million acres of public land, targeting seven species – wolves, coyotes, weasels, skunks, jackrabbits, raccoons and starlings. Contestants vie for prizes for the largest and most animals killed.
According to The Spokesman-Review (Sept. 30), the wolf-coyote derby wants to double the area to 1,500 square miles.
I strongly believe that to look the other way and pretend not to know is unethical and complacent.
