Waste deal stinks
When the Spokane Valley City Council decided to abandon the Spokane County transfer station and recycling facility in favor of Sunshine, it smelled bad. It smells even worse now that the entire truth comes out.
The council never mentioned that Spokane Valley residents would have to pay an additional 3.6 percent state tax because our garbage will no longer be considered fuel. So the council can say, “We didn’t raise taxes; it is a state tax.”
Not only are we going to have to drive through the labyrinth to get to the Sunshine facility that is inconveniently located in the maze on Montgomery, but we get to pay more.
It makes one wonder, why the change and who benefits from this arrangement? Not the citizens of Spokane Valley.
We shall continue to take our garbage and yard waste to the Sullivan Transfer Station. Not only is it more convenient, we will use less gas, pollute less, continue to recycle and produce energy and – come the first of the year (according to the Spokane County Utilities Office) – pay less, not more.
It smelled before; it smells at least 3.6 percent worse now.
