Feature vets regularly

Coeur d’Alene resident Bud Kirchoff, who fought in the Philippines in World War II and survived the Bataan Death March, was honored on Veterans Day as Hayden’s Distinguished Veteran of the year. This was a great honor and so well-deserved.

My Australian uncle died from the cruelty of the Bataan Death March, as did so many other enslaved soldiers. A now-deceased Spokane physician, Dr. Wade Robinson, did survive. We are free people today because of the great sacrifices of these soldiers in the Pacific and those of the military in the European campaign.

There are the veterans living amongst us who fought in the wars of the last 70 years whose stories should be told and not forgotten. Perhaps The Spokesman-Review could have a weekly feature article about a veteran, beginning with the older ones, and written for our citizens of all ages.
