Pitts insightful on parenting
The Sept. 22 column by Leonard Pitts Jr. was refreshing. His description of what a parent must be to children: “loving, accessible, involved, but always an authoritative figure, the one who sets limits, and imposes real and painful consequences for kids who flout them.” Well stated.
I would add another requirement and that is not to discipline in anger. A parent must set well-understood limits on what is and what is not acceptable behavior and be consistent. It is OK to spank – not beat – and do so on the buttocks not on the legs, arms, face or elsewhere on the body.
Well-known child psychologist and author Dr. James Dobson says in his latest book, “Your Legacy,” that rules without relationships lead to rebellion. Earn your right to discipline.
Pitts made several excellent points. I encourage you to read the Sept. 22 column if you haven’t already.
