We watched four hours for that?

A GRIP ON SPORTS

This is going to be short and sweet. Mainly because the Cougar game last night was so long and – ultimately – sour. Read on.

• You hit some, you miss some. Take my predictions for Washington State’s homecoming game against California for example. I thought it might be lower scoring and quicker then most folks were predicting. Those were both misses. The 60-59 Cal win took 4 hours and 4 minutes to play. That’s the length of, what, a 14-inning baseball game or a really bad Michael Cimino movie, right? But I also thought California would win because the youthful WSU secondary wouldn’t be able to contain the Bears’ passing attack. Darn right that’s a hit. It’s a hit without even factoring in a couple of third-quarter California kickoff returns during which the Cougars didn’t hit anyone. Like I said, hit some, miss some. And yes, I know, there is a sad joke in there somewhere concerning if it weren’t for the miss on a short field goal, the night would have been a hit for the Coug faithful. But as it is now, that group of long-suffering folks will have to be content with knowing no one in college football history has ever thrown for more yards in a single game than their quarterback, Connor Halliday. I’m sure Halliday’s total of 734 passing yards would have led the nation for a season until sometime in the 1940s. But that’s all WSU fans have today, a couple of records (besides Halliday’s national passing mark, Vince Mayle set a school record with 263 receiving yards). If one or two little things had gone right – or left, depending on your point of view – the Cougars would have had a 2-1 Pac-12 record, the best in the North. Instead, that mark is California’s. I’m sure not many people would have hit on that before the season began.

• WSU: Late-night games don’t leave much time for reflection in print, but Jacob Thorpe spent a little time early this morning putting together some thoughts on WSU’s home defeat. • I started this post sometime after 3 a.m. Or after I got back from Pullman. It’s hard to remember exactly. It’s now past 5 a.m. and I am ready to post it. Then it’s off to bed. I apologize in advance for any mistakes of fact. I’m blaming it on exhaustion. Mistakes of opinion? I blame those on my dad. Until later …
