Brannon: I Will Uphold Constitution

In a brief telephone interview moments ago, Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon tells Huckleberries Online that his office will issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, if ordered to do so by “a court of competent jurisdiction.” The key part of the interview is as follows:

  • DFO: What will you do if the court orders the Kootenai County Clerk’s Office to issue same-sex marriage licenses?
  • Jim Brannon: I have sworn to follow the Constitution. I will not abandon that oath. I take it seriously. I will follow the orders of any court of competent jurisdiction, which at this time is the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • DFO: In other words, you’ll issue the licenses?
  • Jim Brannon: I’ve sworn to uphold the Constitution. we are a nation of laws. I won’t abandon that oath.
