Gay Marriage: Highs, Lows In Boise

Ten feet and two minutes. That’s how close some Ada County same-sex couples came to getting a marriage license Wednesday morning. More than a dozen couples were queued near the marriage license counter, and staff was ready to begin issuing the licenses at 8 a.m. Then, at 7:58 a.m., Ada County Clerk Chris Rich received word that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy had granted a stay requested by Gov. Butch Otter, halting same-sex marriages in Idaho before they could get started. That came after a three-member panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had lifted the state’s 2006 prohibition Tuesday, saying, in essence, that marriages could proceed immediately. “It was chaotic and very awkward because it is no-go, go, no-go,” said Rich/ Cynthia Sewell , Idaho Statesman.
