Chiefs give away win in final minutes

The first 57 minutes of Friday night’s Spokane Chiefs-Seattle Thunderbirds game may have been imperfect, but the host Chiefs were in prime position to walk away with their first win since Sept. 27. It didn’t work out that way. Read story

The Chiefs dodged some early troubles as Seattle had four power-play opportunities before Spokane had its first. The Chiefs killed each Thunderbirds chance through two periods.

“Four power plays in a row is from not coming out and getting after the other team,” coach Don Nachbaur said. “We have to learn that. We need our older guys to set an example.”

The Chiefs were 0 for 2 on their two attempts with the man advantage, making them 3 for 20 for the season.

Spokane’s offensive troubles are evident, as the team has produced just four goals in the last three games, all losses. The Chiefs have four forwards who are nursing injuries.

“For me, (the injuries) are an excuse,” Nachbaur said. “Some guys are getting a lot of ice time and they’re not doing anything to take steps.”
