Revitalize the park

I grew up listening to family talk about the glories of Expo ’74: the culture, the exhibits and the dramatic transformation that took place in Spokane at Riverfront Park. Spokane, Riverfront Park and the first environmentally themed world’s fair were making a statement.

Riverfront Park is no longer making the statement that it once did. It is no longer the jewel at the center of the city. The buildings are decaying, and it is frightening once dusk falls. We hold two nationally known events that center on the park, Bloomsday and Hoopfest, yet we are not investing in it like we should.

On Nov. 4, it’s time for us to show our pride. Let’s show our love for our city and for our legacy. People came from far and wide to see what Spokane had to offer. It’s time to make them notice us again. And if not for the tourists, let’s do it for ourselves; the people of Spokane. For the days we head to Pig Out, or watch our kids ride the carousel, or just enjoy a picnic on the lawn.

Let’s make it the pride of our city again. Vote yes for parks on Nov. 4.
