I-1351 has consequences
Seeking to reduce school classroom size is a good endeavor. Unfortunately, Initiative 1351 is not the solution.
It does not include a funding source, yet requires the Legislature to increase school spending by $4.7 billion through 2019. This is in addition to what the state’s Supreme Court expects for increases. What will be the source for the $4.7 billion? The Legislature’s choices will be raising taxes, which probably won’t happen, or cutting funds from other vital programs.
The governor ordered the Developmental Disabilities Administration to reduce their budget proposal by $15 million under current spending. Why should our developmentally disabled citizens endure further budget reductions? Does it make sense to reduce spending for our mentally ill citizens when we consider the history of mentally ill people using weapons to kill innocent people, including children?
These are but two examples of why I-1351 does not make sense.
As voters, we need to seriously consider the unintended consequences of initiatives like I-1351. It is irresponsible for such an initiative to lack a funding source, so that legislators are not forced to cut important programs. Please vote no on I-1351.
