OrangeTV (RE: HBO Blogosphere 9.2.14 ): The whole gay bar/straight bar thing is tired. Mik’s opened as a non-discriminatory establishment over 17 years ago and has been the most popular dance club downtown for the entire time. We have never promoted ourselves as being a gay bar, but we do get a lot of LGBT and allies because we want to make everyone feel like they can be themselves without worrying about physical or verbal repercussions from rabble rousers or judgmental Negative Nancys. While we do have a large and vibrant LGBT community in North Idaho, obviously there aren’t enough to fill a bar to occupancy every weekend night like we do. I’d say probably 85% of the crowd on those nights identifies as hetero.
