Covering for sloth

Regarding Shari Lyszkiewicz’s Aug. 30 letter, which stated we need to move on immigration reform so we can get workers to do the jobs we can’t get Americans to do:

Instead, let’s remove the safety nets that take away the sting of not doing those jobs because the taxpayers will foot the bill of supporting those who don’t want to work. I believe if people get hungry enough, they will decide that jobs other than playing video games might not be so bad after all. Also, calling something “reform” when all it is is legalizing breaking the law is a liberal bait-and-switch trick like calling what they believe “progressive” or “democratic.” Sorry, that’s just not the case.

America was built on the principle that hard work will pay off, and those who follow the rules will prosper. Sadly, since the 1940s the liberals have been trying to change that. Instead, we now punish achievement and reward slothfulness. True reform would include requiring an effort to support yourself if the ability is there and tying work to benefits received from the taxpayers. We don’t need 20 million to 30 million new Democrat voters to accomplish that.
