VA eligibility too broad

Several recent letters about the Veterans Administration remind me of a sore point. Why is it that people who served for just three or four years in a peacetime military environment are eligible for free lifetime health care? It’s a small wonder the VA hospitals are so busy.

During those three or four years, the person received paid vocational training, some travel, some character-building experiences, and usually grew up in important ways, so it wasn’t all a big loss of time or opportunity that deserves free medical care forever.

I think the VA medical system should be in place to serve military retirees and those with service-connected injuries. Period. Does any politician have the political integrity to save the taxpayers untold millions of dollars by working toward adjusting the VA system?

My own experience with the VA hospital system (as a twice-wounded Vietnam vet) has been very good, overall.
