Meaningful work ahead
Jim Camden’s Sept. 1 article reminds us that governments never run out of meaningful work to do. The glory of Greece and Rome were all about the can-do spirits of artisans, craftsmen and engineers who were sponsored by deliberating governments bent on advancing the causes of civilization. America once had that spirit, and it’s now time to reignite it.
Let’s dump all of the “can’t do” people in Congress who actually believe their big-business sponsors have more important work to do than our nation does.
We have floodwaters to reroute, diseases to cure, infrastructure to improve, habitat and parks to restore and threatening asteroids to conquer. We also have hazardous processes and sciences to regulate. Imagine where we will be if we let terrorists pack explosives in self-driving cars and smart drones. Does anyone actually believe that private armies and bodyguards can deal with such threats?
Private enterprise is paying Congress for less control – not for the health and happiness of humankind.
We’re all on this Earth together, and it’s time we got back to making sacrifices for the peaceful causes of civilization and humanity. And besides, we have a lot of good people who’d love to have the work.
