Amend campaign cash laws
In Steve Dunham’s letter, “Don’t change Constitution” (Sept. 16), he warns against calling a constitutional convention. Although I agree with him that our nation’s budgeting concerns can be solved without a constitutional amendment, there are other problems in our political system that do require an amendment to be solved.
The Supreme Court has unleashed a flood of money into our elections with rulings such as Citizens United and McCutcheon v. FEC. Each year the amount of money spent in our elections increases and the money comes from just a few wealthy individuals and corporations. Democracy only works when our representatives are accountable to their constituents, not super PACs, megadonors and corporations.
In order to solve the problem of big money in politics there needs to be a constitutional amendment to overturn the disastrous Supreme Court decisions. Even though the majority of Americans, liberal and conservative, want to get big money out of elections, the Senate just failed to pass such an amendment.
A constitutional convention could provide the chance to solve the problem of money in politics even if our representatives in Congress won’t vote for what their constituents want.
