God delusion tragic

I commend Raymond Harris (March 28) for his wishful thinking that all religions could acknowledge one god and stop fighting. Sadly, that’s all it is; wishful thinking. As long as most of humanity continues to labor under the delusion that some imaginary being, call it what you will, is in control, there will be no peace.

Imaginary beings, it turns out, are very demanding, requiring all manner of sacrifice and obedience to bizarre rules and regulations. Example: Seven Jewish kids are dead because of a religious rule that prohibits turning on a stove on the Sabbath. Example: A 27-year-old Afghani woman is beaten, stoned, burned and thrown off a bridge, because someone said she tore a page out of a religious book.

I have no illusion that anything I write here is going to change the mind of someone suffering from a god delusion, but maybe it’s time for the unbelievers to come forward. I’d love to see a politician step up and declare that belief in mythic beings is not part of their platform.

And to those of you who will pray for me; thanks, but no thanks. I’ve got the protective unicorns on my side, and they rock.
