Verduin clarifies positions

The race in District 3 is the most competitive for Spokane City Council, and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to share frank answers with the editorial board and earn their endorsement. However, for the record, it is important to clarify the two points deemed “concerns” by the editorial board.

First, the City Council position is a part-time job for a citizen legislator, and a position that should be held by people who are successful in their private careers (like previous council member Steve Salvatori). My opponent has worked almost exclusively in government. Instead of a government insider, I am a business owner and will bring balance to the council.

Second, it also should be clarified that the editorial misstated my position on the ombudsman commission. My stance has always been that the oversight commission should be increased in size and contain a broader cross section of Spokane residents; everyday people. I simply told the board that in my personal experience I had not encountered any cause for mistrust and have a huge amount of respect for our men and women in uniform. However, I support the overwhelming majority of Spokane residents and their desire to establish the commission.
