Then and Now 8/10: Tennessee House at Stevens and Front

1905: Men and cargo wagons are loaded before heading southbound on Stevens Street in Spokane. The Tennessee House is the two-story building at the center of the photo.

Today’s Then and Now column is about a relatively nondescript hotel at the corner of Stevens St. and Front Ave. It didn’t make history but it was a a serviceable hotel that sheltered railroad workers and weary travelers who were dropped off at the Great Northern depot across the Spokane River. All that’s left of that depot is Spokane’s clocktower.

Front Ave. is now Spokane Falls Blvd., but it was once a row of hotels, some upscale, but most were modest in price and accommodations. See today’s column here.
