Tree research too late
How ironic that the Toronto researchers (“Tree-lined streets may be health aid,” July 26) report about the benefits of tree-lined streets aiding health should appear in The Spokesman-Review one month after all the Columbia Circle residents did to save the magnificent trees that once lined their street.
According to the research, the benefits of spending $500 to $3,000 to add 10 new trees to a single block was a good investment because they improve air quality and control water runoff. Much healthier people live on tree-lined streets.
Too bad this research came too late to help the Columbia Circle area, but, hopefully, Spokane’s mayor and City Council will recognize that trees, full grown, not twigs to replace fully developed trees, are a benefit to the city and a neighborhood and need to be saved.
