The Slice: Goofy behavior would not be tolerated

If the Marmot Lodge were to produce a Spokane television show inspired by “The Mickey Mouse Club,” would any local youths watch?

C’mon, kids. Let’s all sing! “M-A-R…M-O-T…”

But perhaps a rodent-themed cartoon show should come first.

Let’s move on.

How you reacted upon seeing a “For Sale” sign go up in your neighborhood: “We rejoiced,” said Jan Jesberger, recalling a particular family.

“I’m surprised that you didn’t hear my shouts of joy,” said another reader who asked that I keep her name to myself because the police-magnet neighbors in question have not left yet.

Advice for students starting middle school this fall: This comes from Linda Delaney, seventh-grade counselor at Spokane’s Sacajawea Middle School.

• Remember that fully a third to half of all students in your school are also brand new on the first day and are sharing your feelings of nervousness and uncertainty.

• Your teachers, counselors and administrators are truly excited to meet you and welcome you to the new school year.

• The only students I have ever seen stuffed in a locker or garbage can were placed there by themselves.

• Walk into your school on the first day with excitement, anticipation and determination to be the best student you can possibly be.

And Ann Hill passed along a bit of what she referred to as “ancient advice.”

“If you’re changing from Catholic school to public junior high school, remember you don’t need to make the sign of the cross after reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in home room.”

The silence of the passenger’s seat: Connie Murray’s daughter just got her driver’s license and Connie let her go on her first solo drive.

“When she returned, I asked her how it went. She said ‘It was really quiet.’ ”
