The Slice: Not exactly cross-country moves

George Weisbarth has a nomination for the category of shortest interstate moves.

It involved crossing the street.

“Several years ago, some of our family helped my mother-in-law move from one state to another …with wheelbarrows. At the time, Beth (mom) lived on State Street in Oldtown, Idaho. She eventually sold her house and moved to a house about two lots down and across State Street in Newport, Washington. I distinctly remember loading her sofa onto a wheelbarrow and pushing it across the street to her new front door with someone on each ending balancing the sofa.”

And there being no prohibition against crossing state lines with a used couch, that was OK.

Chris Caraway’s family once moved three houses down on the same street (from a rental to a house they could buy). “Worst move ever! Since it was so close, we figured we didn’t need to pack so well.”

Big mistake.

Donald Schaefer told about some friends on Spokane’s South Hill who moved from their home to the house next door this summer.

What you learned from the experience of taking communal showers after PE class: “I’m normal,” wrote Carl Eklund.

“My experience with group showers after high school gym class was that it gave a whole new meaning to ‘gifted student,’” wrote Steve Ball.

Moses Lake’s Rich Victor learned that you could almost cut yourself with unforgiving school towels that felt like sandpaper.

And Karin Carter shared this. “I learned I didn’t have anything to be self-conscious about. Nudity is a great equalizer.”

Just wondering: What are the pros and cons of marrying a diehard RC Cola loyalist?

Slice answer: “I checked my sixth grade class photo and confirmed that I could name 26 of my 27 classmates,” write Ted Redman. “That may not be something to be overly smug about, however, as 19 of the 22 members of my 1961 Palouse High School graduation class had gone through all 12 years of school together.”

Today’s Slice question: What did/will colleagues say about you when you retire?
