What about the masks?

I am wondering why, when Alaska Flight 2372 filled with smoke, the oxygen masks weren’t deployed. It seems that getting to each passenger with a wet towel was more time-consuming and less effective. The Dec. 16 Spokesman-Review article did not explain why this was the preferred solution.
