No Valentines For These Newly Weds
Valentine’s Day won’t be as joyous as several Latah County newlywed couples expected after finding out the state has declared their
marriage licenses and weddings invalid.
Kathy Sprague and Tabitha Simmons were married during the late afternoon on Oct. 10 and were considered the first same-sex couple in Idaho to be officially married. Five other same-sex couples got married by 5 p.m., when the clerk’s office normally closes.
Many of these couples had immediate marriage ceremonies and returned their licenses to the county before the clerk’s office was shut down for the weekend. “I’m frustrated with the state,” Sprague said Thursday after she and Simmons received their letter from the county. “I’m left with the feeling that in Boise there is malice or gross incompetence”/
