Sex offender registry could expand to include those convicted of other violent crimes

Here’s a news item from the Associated Press: BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho legislative panel is considering a bill to add people convicted of violent crimes — such as murder, kidnapping and felony domestic violence — to the state’s sex offender registry. The House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to consider expanding the registry to include violent offenders. Rep. Robert Anderst from Nampa says he wants to provide safe communities for the public and previous victims of violence. Other crimes included in the registry would be attempted murder, attempted strangulation, human trafficking and battery with intent to commit a serious felony. Each offender would pay a fee to cover the costs of bookkeeping. Rep. Lynn Luker from Boise questioned whether some of the specific crimes included were necessary. Anderst said he understood concerns over civil liberties.
