Make gas tax fair

Washington’s gas tax is 37.5 cents per gallon, the ninth-highest in the nation. Just because gas prices have dropped recently doesn’t mean they will not go back up in the future. Will the tax be reduced? No, it won’t. I pay about $360 per year in gas tax.

To make this a fair tax, I suggest that: All hybrid cars be taxed at $100 per year for road use. All electric cars be taxed at $150 per year for road use. All adult bicycles be taxed at $20 per year for road use. All state and local government vehicles be taxed for road use. All transit-use tickets be taxed at 5 percent for road use, and all gasoline taxes be designated for road and bridge maintenance only.

If Seattle wants a big tunnel, then put a toll on it. We homeowners are taxed twice for roads, state and real estate taxes. We also need more research into better road-building materials and methods.
