Reconsider film incentive vote

In lieu of the upcoming Oscars this Sunday, I can’t help but think of how many local companies were impacted by the nominated films shot in their cities. Most people view filmmaking as a Hollywood thing, but the reality is that Washington companies have been making films, good films, award-winning films, for many years.

As a Directors Guild of America assistant director with 11 years of film experience, I can testify that filmmaking is a business, and business builds and supports communities. It helps cities such as Spokane to thrive and grow, bringing new opportunities for job creation. Currently, our film incentive generates $10 for every $1 invested.

Sen. Michael Baumgartner has served the 6th Legislative District in Spokane well. I would ask that he reconsider his position on SB 6027 and allow for an increase in our state’s film incentive to keep it competitive. No one wants to turn away another $55 million in profits again next year.
