State Rep. Vito Barbieri on Monday became the most recent example of why men are widely unqualified to regulate a woman’s body. Barbieri, R-Dalton Gardens, is a member of the House State Affairs Committee, which held a bill hearing on legislation that would require counseling and an in-person exam before a woman could access early term abortion drugs, such as RU-486. And Barbieri went and did what always seems to happen when men debate ovaries: He asked a stupid question and displayed an incredible misunderstanding of basic anatomy. Couldn’t women just swallow a camera for a gynecological exam, Barbieri asked. “It can’t be done, simply because, if you swallow a pill, it won’t end up in the vagina,” said Dr. Julie Madsen, who was testifying to the safety of chemical abortion drugs.
