Inadvertent holiday cheer

I recently saw a cartoon that depicted the front door of the White House emblazoned with a message of “Feliz Navidad” above a Christmas wreath. My first thought was, “How kind and thoughtful.” Someone is recognizing that our Latino brothers and sisters are a vital part of our communities in many ways and is wishing them a warm and welcoming holiday.

The ironic thing was that the artist meant it to be spiteful and demeaning. Maybe I am crazy, but the best laugh for me came from the idea that the artist was hoping to disseminate mistrust and fear, yet might have ended up conveying the exact opposite emotions to many casual observers.

Thank you, Mr. Ramirez, for inadvertently spreading some good cheer.
