On The Waterfront

Walking partner Greg Lee and I were forced to make two detours as we walked along the waterfront during the noon hour today, to avoid tree thinning on Dike Road (Rosenberry Drive). Street Department crews were running a chipper to dispose of tree limbs at West Lakeshore Drive and Hubbard Avenue (street running along east side of NIC’s Boswell Hall. We made another detour, onto the beach this time, to avoid a tree-cutting area at the bend in Dike Road (mouth of the Spokane River). A pile of fallen, limbed bull pine laid across the road, blocking vehicles and pedestrians. I suspect a couple of hundred trees have fallen so far. The thinning is noticeable along the Spokane River. But not as much along the lake side of the Dike Road. More cutting is left. Greg wondered what was happening to the cut trees? Is the city selling them to recoup some of the expense of the logging operation. Good questions. Paging Keith Erickson.
