Unions do earn members

“We the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union,” etc. – by bonding together for the common good.

Regarding Cindy Omlin’s July 12 letter, “Unions should earn their members”: Unions do earn their members by negotiating for the common good, i.e. better pay, working conditions, pensions, etc. When Omlin uses the words “professionalism and protection,” I believe she is referring to organizations like the American Medical Association, the Association of General Contractors, and the Spokane Realtors Association, all of these associations are (unions) bonding together for the common good. Do they have to pay dues to belong? I believe they do.

In the Idaho Education Association, they have an opt-out clause by which members can declare that a portion of their dues goes to a charity of their choice.
