Retire the Confederate flag

Regarding Jeanie Smith’s July 18 letter: The success of the South was built on the backbone of black slaves. They have suffered in silence these many years by the reminder of the Confederate flag and what it represents.

They do indeed have the courage to stand up and say, “Enough.” And they have stood up and fought hard for that flag to come down. Let’s put this unsavory part of American history to rest. Retire the flag.
