Not wrong to erase Wright
Regarding opposition to renaming Fort George Wright and avenue: This isn’t revising history. What a shame we cannot do that. He was a product of his day?
We people of today control today. The fort and street were named by the people of the naming day. It is our turn. There are many precedents.
Evidence exists, even by his own hand, that Gen. George Wright was a murderer and a terrorist bent on genocide, if he “must.” And for what purpose? Peace? No, more likely profit, or fame, or both. The Indians were no angels, even amongst themselves, but they were invaded. To the victors go the spoils? Inevitably true.
However, we learn. There are better ways. Following orders is a lousy excuse, and placing any person on a pedestal following such heinous acts is itself a heinous act.
Even though they were heroes to many in their time, we are not likely to see streets or buildings named after Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Tomas Torquemada, or even other tyrants our own government has supported throughout history, until it was no longer convenient.
Wright deserves to have his name prominently displayed in one place, on his tombstone.
