Clean energy no guarantee

William Pennell (May 30) denigrates those who disagree with his theories. But many distinguished scientists believe that natural forces such as solar irradiance variations, volcanic activity and asteroid hits are the principal causes of climate change, and that climate models that promote anthropogenic causes have proven to be, at best, faulty.

Pennell’s assertion that Exxon and other oil companies have accepted global climate change, and promote zero carbon emissions by 2100, is erroneous, as is evidenced by Exxon’s recent annual meeting.

And then there is former Cabinet member George Schultz’s proposal for a carbon tax, which would be redistributed to consumers.

First, what kind of new government bureaucracy would be required to do this? Maybe an expansion of the corrupt and inept Internal Revenue Service? And how much of the redistribution would be left after funding this monstrosity?

And would this huge artificial increase in energy costs create new, clean energy sources? Currently, we have two viable sources of high base load, carbon-free energy; nuclear and hydro. But both are vehemently opposed by environmentalists. Innovative clean energy sources, particularly solar-based, will undoubtedly be developed, but not by raising taxes.
