It’s about McCleary
I learned in high school civics that our government, either state or federal, was based on a system of checks and balances, i.e., laws originated within the Legislature, were signed by the executive and then deemed to be legally sufficient by the Supreme Court.
Shelley Redinger, superintendent of Spokane Public Schools, provided her input on the recent teachers’ walkout, and her opposition to such a walkout was eloquently stated. Her clarifications of the public education funding dilemma were especially commendable.
The crux of the funding matter is the McCleary decision by the Washington Supreme Court. My questions are:
What is the aegis of the McCleary decision? Where did McCleary originate? How did it fare in the Legislature and has the governor approved it? Don’t we have to have a particular party to blame? Should the Supreme Court be involved in such matters?
Or are all these questions moot because, after all, there is no court of appeal for such Supreme Court deliberations.
