Spelling champ fails grammar

I laughed aloud with delight when I read the May 29 article about the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s co-champions, Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam.

According to the article, when Gokul was asked what went through his mind when he found out he would share the victory, he replied, “Me and Vanya were going to be the champions.”

Evidently, the young man’s grammar studies have suffered neglect in his pursuit of excellence in spelling.
