Every once in a while there is just too much on

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Can it be Friday again already? Must be. My to-do list, which includes which sporting events to watch, is growing by the minute. Read on.

• Sat down to dinner last night. The TV was on. A women’s World Cup between Canada and New Zealand was about to start. I was informed I didn’t have to watch it because, “the U.S. plays tomorrow night and we’re watching that.” OK then. I turned it to the Warriors dismantling of the Cavs . Now I have to figure where I can hide the remote tonight. Sure, the Stanley Cup isn’t on again until tomorrow and the NBA Finals don’t resume until Sunday, but Felix is pitching tonight in Houston, so we have to watch that, right? So how about you? How do you decide when there is more than one sporting event on at the same time and one decision-maker in the house wants to watch Sport A while the other one wants Sport B? Do you go your separate ways, watching different TVs? Or do you compromise, picking one and checking in on the other during breaks in the action? I don’t like the latter because invariably, one of two things happen. Either the other event is also at commercial at the same time – raising my blood pressure about 24 points – or, and this even worse, something exciting just happened and you just missed the key replay. Then you watch and watch, hoping they’ll show it again but they don’t and, by the time you switch back, something big happened there as well. That’s when I throw the remote to the floor, stomp up the stairs to my room, slam the door and eat little chocolates I’ve hidden my room. After two or three (dozen) I’ve calmed down enough to find the highlights on the computer and can move on. Actually, I don’t anticipate a problem tonight. The TV where I am sitting will have the M’s game on. It will be about the size of a 1980s-era microwave. The TV where Kim will be sitting will have the World Cup game on. That one is about the size of a 1980s-era Buick. So we both win, right?

• OK, it is Friday. Maybe you won’t even be home tonight to watch the soccer or baseball or whatever. There was a time I was like that, out partying every Friday night. That was a great couple weeks. Until later …
