Not high on Stuckart, Stratton

As a retired educator, still teaching, I don’t really need a cause. But after reading Shawn Vestal’s June 10 column, unseating Spokane City Council President Ben “Pothead” Stuckart and Councilwoman Karen “I’m going to cash in on this” Stratton seems a worthy goal.

I hope Stuckart is keeping careful and copious notes on city business because the latest research on marijuana suggests it causes serious memory problems. He also needs to keep a psychologist close. Professional colleagues I have known have gone from users to forceful foes of cannabis because of the psychological damage, depression especially, they saw in long-term use.

As for Stratton, any public servant who thinks it’s OK to make money off of promoting and selling “vice” is not someone I want governing my city. We live in an age when nothing seems to bother anyone as long it’s legal. Sorry, I still want maturity, good sense and moral character in my city leaders.

When Jerry Brown, the liberal of all liberal governors, says that California is not going to legalize pot anytime soon because a generation high on marijuana isn’t likely to be competitive in the world market, I think people like Stuckart and Stratton ought to listen.
