Don’t accommodate bad drivers

Great photo of congested traffic in both directions to go with the March 1 story, “Fewer lanes, more safety.”

The traffic engineers are caving to those poor drivers who don’t know the rules of the road. These same engineers are forgetting that traffic volumes will increase over the next several years.

The object of traffic engineering is to move traffic in a safe, timely manner, with future needs considered. Are they trying to dumb down the streets to accommodate the lowest common denominator driver?

When we get a serious snow event, traffic comes to a virtual crawl southbound on Indian Trail Road. This would most likely be the case on other major arterials. As the photo shows, traffic backs up now, on a clear roadway.

I have been a safe driver instructor for 11 years. Some of the participants in my classes shouldn’t be driving. Let’s not (re)design the roads to accommodate them and other scofflaws.
