The Slice: ‘Weed’ is a relative concept

Now that it’s officially spring, perhaps a reminder is in order.

Just letting your yard go to hell isn’t the same thing as xeriscaping. The two approaches to residential landscaping are really quite different.

Let’s move on.

Riffing on “The Twilight Zone”: Inland Northwest earthlings installed in a zoo exhibit on a distant planet would be shown having an unending meeting, said Gary Polser.

Not a good matchup: “It was the summer of 1953,” wrote Cal Riemcke. “I was playing in a summer basketball league in Oakland, California, and it was the year between Bill Russell’s freshman and sophomore years (at USF) and nobody had heard of him at that time.”

Russell’s summer league team also featured future pro K.C. Jones.

“Russell blocked my jump shot from the top of the key and ran down and stuffed it. Embarrassing.”

When playing golf leaves a mark: “A partner on the Wandermere back nine hit a ball off a tree which hit me in the thigh,” wrote Danelle Crabtree. “It left a purple circle the size of the ball with a white ring around it surrounded by a purple halo three inches wide.”

Slice answer: “I would never get a tattoo,” said Sherri Hyams. “But I’ve often thought that if I did I would get lips on my butt. Like a kiss or something.”

“Mikado” memories: “I was a freshman in high school in 1960 at Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, California, and was given the role of Yum-Yum’s sidekick, Peep-Bo,” wrote Linda Peterson. “I did my best to be pert as a school girl well can be and filled to the brim with girlish glee. My family thought I was a natural for that one.”

“I was Yum-Yum in our high school’s production of ‘The Mikado’ in 1964 in Butte,” wrote Ceil Orr. “The line I had a real problem delivering was ‘Yes, I am beautiful!’ I thought it sounded a bit conceited.”

Today’s Slice question: If you had to counter-program against the NCAA tournament, what would your TV station/network air?
