Nonreligious atrocities abound
Sandy Tarbox, in her letter on April 9, seems to be trying to say that all of the bad things that are going wrong in the world are due to religions and faith in God. While terrible acts done in the name of religion cannot be minimized, when they are compared to the atrocities done under the atheistic, utopian schemes of the last century, they pale in comparison.
Between Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao Zedong and Pol Pot, there are estimates of 145 million people killed under their leadership. Add to those of Japanese imperialism and African tribalism, and you add up to a significant number of human deaths that had nothing to do with religion, and everything to with humanist philosophy.
