The Slice: Readers drink up nostalgia
Several cases of readers shared memories of their favorite childhood soft drinks.
Here are just a few sips.
“Dr. Pepper, in the bottle, ice cold,” wrote Curt Olsen.
“Delaware Punch,” said Rick Thrasher.
“Cragmont Cherry Cola” said Tom Stoeser.
“Pepsi Cola,” said Jo Nullet.
“Coke,” said Charlene Luzynski.
“Nehi Grape Soda,” wrote Bill Reuter.
“Orange Crush,” wrote Roy Jeremiah.
“Hires Root Beer,” wrote Anne Albrecht.
“Shasta Crème Soda,” said Maggie Fritz.
Longtime correspondent Tim Wink said he probably should have been drawn to Wink soda. But he didn’t care for the grapefruit beverage. His favorite pop was a brand of cream soda that had blue bottle caps. “That was nirvana to a little kid.”
For some parents: Grandparents are almost the only child-care option, even if it sometimes means putting up with the smoking, swearing and less than enobling stands on public policy issues.
Here’s a tip: There is a chance that most of what you assume about Cinco de Mayo is wrong.
The Slice question from 20 years ago on this date: If everyone had to go through customs when crossing the Washington-Idaho state line, what questions would the border guards ask?
Slice answers (DNA testing): “For several generations there has been a story passed down that my mother’s grandmother was a Native American,” wrote Jack Goodwin. “There are several versions of this story, but all basically the same. I could not find any evidence of this in the genealogy research I did. So about five years ago I had a mitochondria DNA test. The results revealed that the story was false. I was really disappointed, but there are those in the family who will not accept the scientific evidence.”
Tomas Lynch shared this. “You asked if anyone had taken a mail-in-your-spit DNA test. I actually have. I used ‘23 and Me.’ I found out a lot of things. I am actually more Irish than I previously thought, and I am 2.3 percent Neanderthal.”
Sarah Jensen said her results indicate she is 5 percent Neanderthal.
