Vandals show moral failing

Several years ago, Spokane had a program in which about a dozen bright yellow bikes were parked in various locations. An attached sign would invite anyone to ride one as they had need. They were requested to leave it in a public area so that others could avail themselves of this handy mode of transportation as well. Unfortunately, the program came to an abrupt end when most of these bicycles ended up in the Spokane River.

Recently, I have heard of parked bikes being vandalized throughout the city, especially in the region bordered by Fourth and Main avenues, and Browne and Maple streets. Apparently, nobody took the time to teach these hooligans that private property is private. Public property is equally sacrosanct.

When a young person disrespectfully behaves, the parents are usually blamed. While there is a germ of truth here (morality starts in the family), it is high time for people to take ownership of their transgressions. There are legitimate outlets for venting your frustrations.

Jesus said to “do unto others as you would have others do to you.” The next bike that is torn apart may be yours. The next house that is defaced with graffiti may be your mother’s.
