The Slice: Tips for dealing with growing pains

The Slice had asked about men’s reactions to noticing their hairline was in retreat.

Mead’s Nina Elo took the liberty of answering.

“Okay, so I’m not a man, and I don’t have receding hair, but if I were a man, I would do this when I noticed: I would pat my head reverently and say to my hair, ‘Grow, and thin no more!’ ”

Slice answer: Civil engineer Jim Markley keeps a travel journal. “So … drum roll please … since 2000 I have traveled 47,080 miles by train.”

By the numbers: When Lars Neises makes purchases, he sometimes draws historical connections to the cash register total. On occasion, he shares this with the cashier.

“A couple of months ago my total was $18.65. I commented, ‘the war is finally over.’ The cashier gave me a puzzled look and a ‘Huh?’

“I said that my total was the year the Civil War ended. She said, ‘I sucked at history.’ ”

Lots of readers could identify Gen. James Mattoon Scott: He was the high-ranking military man who set about overthrowing the U.S. government in “Seven Days In May.”

Burt Lancaster played the role in the 1964 movie based on a novel.

Slice reader Ted Lawson still remembers walking past the White House while wearing his Air Force uniform on the night he saw the movie.

Mixed bag: Nadine Joubert said she wears some of her nice jewelry every day.

Dan Lambert said a special day on the calendar for adults who do not have children might be called No Dependents Day.

In the matter of pets’ genetic makeup, Jim Erdman said his cat is so good at stretching out that he suspects the feline might have a python in his family tree.

Shari Davis was one of many who said she would unhesitatingly trust all of her immediate neighbors with a spare set of house keys.

And Terry Kolemaine says that if he had been given an opportunity to speak to President Richard Nixon during Expo ’74’s opening day, he would have bluntly urged him to go ahead and resign.
