PSA: KCSO Warns Boaters

A public service announcement from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Marine Division:

As the Memorial Day holiday weekend is upon us, our Marine Patrols will be in full swing on area lakes and rivers. As numerous boaters hit the water over this holiday weekend, here’s a few tips to remember so that your boating experience is both enjoyable and safe:

  • Check the condition of your boat front to back, inside and out, ensure all the drain plugs are in and the required safety equipment is on board.
  • Check the condition of your battery/batteries and ensure they are still operational.
  • Check that you have sufficient and serviceable life jackets on board for all occupants, especially for the kids that might have grown a bit since last boating season.
  • Check your fire extinguisher and ensure it is still operational and accessible.

By doing a few preventive measures before you go out, you will reduce the risk of having issues later.

Question: Do you plan to boat this weekend? Where?

Please feel free to flag down one of the marine teams at the launch ramps or on the water for a free safety inspection.
