Strike sets bad example
It is unfortunate that in voting to strike, teachers are setting a bad example for their students and the public. It is illegal for public employees to strike in Washington, so how will they maintain that their students should follow the school rules when the teachers will not follow the law against striking? Why has neither the school board nor the attorney general attempted to stop the strike?
In addition, it is reported that their union contract has a no-strike clause in it. How will teachers teach their students that they should honor their contractual obligations when the teachers do not honor the provisions of theirs with the school board, which represents the public?
Whatever happened to the term “public service” and all it entails? I don’t believe it allows public servants to demand that a particular action be taken. This bad example will put hundreds of parents at a disadvantage even though some are supportive of the issues, perhaps alienating them.
Set a good example for the students and the public, act legally, honor the provisions of your contract, and cancel the strike.
