Maps in stories would help
I am a daily reader of The Spokesman-Review and enjoy the local paper immensely for its historical, informational and educational values. I wish more people would glean the value of its content as often and thoroughly as I do.
However, where in the world is Petisovci, Slovenia? Or, a little closer to home, where exactly is Toronto? How many people in Spokane understand just how close Roseburg, Oregon, is to their front porch?
It wouldn’t take up too much space to quantify these valuable articles with an implant of a small map for reference, which may in turn goad someone to read, in lieu of skipping, a tremendously informative article simply because they have no idea where Gillette, Wyoming, is, and how it’s representatives and economy could possibly affect the train traffic or air quality in Spokane.
Or how close the violence in the Middle East is to the suddenly awakened sleeping bear in Russia.
A little proximity context may interest even those who are not necessarily geographically gifted.
