Gun criticism simplistic
Regarding the Doug Floyd Nov. 7 letter, “Shoot straight on guns”: He argues that because a study found New York police officers hit only 18 out of 100 live fire targets, the shootings at Umpqua Community College would not have been affected if a “good person” had a weapon. He finds armed students “scary.” Illogical.
Even more scary is when only the shooter has a firearm. Consider: Our president and most other leaders in the world are defended by firearms. Our airports and federal buildings are all defended by firearms. Our Constitution forbids jailing people just because they threaten others, although that is slowly changing. Mental health treatment is difficult to apply by force, and is not very effective.
The Spokesman-Review refuses to publish any real sober look at this paradox, choosing to just repeat the progressive propaganda about gun control from Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. No one really wants to solve this problem. Defend Obama but not our children?
