Bible passages selective

To be consistent, Shannon Taylor’s Sept. 29 letter to the editor should have been titled, “Christians follow some of God’s laws.” Many are using select Bible passages to support their attitude toward gay marriage, while conveniently ignoring other laws as stated in the Bible.

Per the Bible, “Christian values” must also mean: (1) Condemning those who pierce or tattoo their bodies (Leviticus 19:28); (2) Refusing to eat shellfish (Leviticus 11:10-11); (3) Refusing to eat pork (Leviticus 11:7-8); and (4) Refusing to work on Sunday (Exodus 35:2).

Guess this also means that store clerks, health professionals, first responders, military personnel and others who work on the Sabbath “shall be put to death.” One could, however, justify ignoring this directive by referring to Exodus 20:13 or Deuteronomy 5:17 (“Thou shalt not kill”), although this also points out one of many contradictions and inconsistencies found in the Holy Scriptures.

It’s hypocritical to use passages in the Bible to justify one’s homophobic beliefs while ignoring other parts of the Scripture we find inconvenient. For those who insist it their “Christian right” to refuse to provide services to gay couples, I have a simple question: What would Jesus do?
