Family wage benefits workers
It was to be expected that Spokane’s so-called Workers Bill of Rights mandating a family wage (to be on the ballot Nov. 3) would be supported by labor, representing people, and opposed by business, representing property.
Voters should be aware that not three months ago Great Britain’s conservative chancellor of the Exchequer announced his government’s intention to legislate a compulsory national living wage.
Men with only a high school education, whose real earnings are today about one-fifth less than 35 years ago, would benefit most from a similar measure in Spokane. As would the businesses where they spend their higher earnings.
